Dundalk FC have confirmed that Robbie Benson has signed a new contract at the club.
The midfielder now enters into what will be his fourth season at the club and he has been a crucial part of our recent success – winning two league titles, the EA SPORTS Cup, Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup including the 2018 Double. The Athlone native has also featured prominently in European competition making 17 appearances including five in the Europa League Group Stage.
Overall the 26 year-old has made 117 appearances for the Club and has now penned a new one-year deal.
Speaking after putting pen-to-paper at Oriel Park, Benson was understandably pleased to get the deal signed to remain at Oriel Park.
“I am very happy to get it all done. It was just a matter of dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. We’re back in now to do a little bit of training and check our body fats, it’s the first time since I’ve been here that we have been in before Christmas which is great. We had a great season last year and we managed to get the title back and win the FAI Cup as well which was a great way to end the season so it was a good one for us.
The highlight was indeed the ‘Double’ and the former UCD midfielder is looking to continue that success into the 2019 season.
“You don’t win a league and Cup double too often. Some of the lads who have been around in 2015 achieved it before and this was my first time doing it so it was great for me and for all of us. The players that are here and the style of football that we play will hopefully ensure that kind of success will continue.
“The majority have signed for next year and that keeps the ball rolling for next year.”
