101st anniversary of the sinking of SS Dundalk to be marked this Sunday

To mark the 101st anniversary of the sinking of the SS Dundalk, the SS Dundalk 1918 Centenary Commemoration Committee will welcome the new Shannon Class Lifeboat The Michael O’Brien to Dundalk this weekend.

All those who wish to see the new lifeboat are invited to join the committee at the Memorial on the Navvy Bank at 12.30pm on Sunday.

The committee will present monies raised from the sale of their memorial book to the RNLI on the day in the presence of the new Clogherhead Shannon Class Lifeboat.

The SS Dundalk was cruelly struck by a German submarine on October 14th 1918 with the loss of 20 lives, most of them local to Dundalk and the surrounding area.

The boat was struck on her return journey from Liverpool 30 miles south of the Isle of Man at 11pm.

Last year to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking, a memorial clock was erected along the Navvy Bank.
